SED's dead: Canon abandons development of latest HDTVs, we take a look again PDF Print E-mail
Oh, surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED). We still keep in mind the halcyon days of 2005 after we first laid eyes upon your black as a CRT / thin as a plasma or LCD self, and equally recognize the ache of each false start and delay that followed, each leading as much as as we speak's announcement by Canon that it is abandoning SED HDTVs entirely. It had held out hope as late as final spring that the expertise might have a future in skilled shows, but Japan's The Nikkei stories it simply could not carry down prices enough. There's still the likelihood for a future in "picture diagnostic equipment" but all those prototypes will never see the sunshine of mass production. Check after the break for some of the highlights alongside the way in which, or simply to imagine what may need been if not for lawsuits and technical issues.
